| Representative of the Sieur de Champney, "a younger son of the noble house of de Champnee in Normandy" (acording to BEB1841), who may have been the ancestor who "came into England with the Conqueror" (according to Commoners), was ... | |||||||||||||||
| Sir Amyan Champneys (a temp Henry II who r. 1154-1189) | |||||||||||||||
| 1. | Sir Amyan Champneys | ||||||||||||||
| BEB1841 identifies Amyan's wife as Anne, dau of Courtenay, Earl of Devon, by his wife, Blanch, dau of Lewis, King of France. That is easily ignored. Commoners identifies her as follows, identifying Reginald as "progeniitor of the Earls of Devon". | |||||||||||||||

| A. | Sir John Champneys | ||||||||||||||
| m. _ Turberville (dau of Sir Richard Turberville) | |||||||||||||||
| i. | Sir Hugh Champneys | ||||||||||||||
| m. Maud Avenell (dau/heir of Sir John Avenell, son of Sir Geoffry) | |||||||||||||||
| Commoners reports that the Champneys of Orchardleigh were the senior branch of the family. BEB1841, which covers that branch, jumps from this generation (Sir Hugh & Maud) to the undermentioned Sir Henry who married Elizabeth Horrey. We have seen the intervening generations reported on various web sites but they merely repeat what Commoners shows for the next generations for the Champneys of Kent, showing Sir Henry as brother of the John (m. Johanna Aylworth) whose line is continued by Commoners. We follow this provisionally but note that we have yet to see confirmed in a 'traditional source' that the following generations did in fact apply to the Champneys of Orchardleigh as well as to the Champneys of Ostenhanger, | |||||||||||||||
