Nicholas, along with his elder brother (who dsp), was illegitimate. His mother was Elizabeth Howard who gave birth to him whilst she was married to William Knollys, 1st Earl of Banbury. His real father was Edward Vaux (as shown by the link above). He took the name Knollys and claimed the Earldom of Banbury, as did his successors. The matter was not finally resolved until 1813 when the House of Lords rejected the claim. |
