Families covered: Pomeroy of Bery Pomeroy, Pomeroy of Bingley, Pomeroy of Halberton, Pomeroy of Tregney
| (1) BHO ('Parishes: Constantine - Cury' in Magna Britannia, vol 3 (1814) by Institute of Historical Research) reported that: "The manor of Tregony was, at a very early period, in the ancient family of the Pomeroys, who are supposed to have acquired it by the marriage of Joel, son of Ralph de Pomeroy, who came over with William the Conqueror, with a natural daughter of Henry I., and sister of Reginald, Earl of Cornwall. His descendant, Henry de Pomeroy, was summoned to parliament, as a baron, in the reign of Henry III., being the only one of the family who was thus distinguished. This manor, which appears to have been very extensive, continued, for several descents, in the Pomeroys. The elder branch of the Pomeroys of Tregony became extinct, in the male line, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when, according to Hals, this manor passed, with its heiress, to the Penkevils." (2) BHO ('General history: Extinct noble families' in Magna Britannia, vol 6 (1822) by Institute of Historical Research) reported that: "This ancient family continued to possess the barony of Berry till the attainder of Sir Thomas Pomeroy, in the reign of Edward VI. The heiresses or co-heiresses of Valletort, Merton, Beavill, and Denzell, married into this family. The elder branch of this family became extinct in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when the heiress is said to have married Penkevil: younger branches were of Sandridge and of Ingesdon in this county; a co-heiress of Pomeroy of Sandridge married Gilbert, ancestor of the Rev. Pomeroy Gilbert of Bodmin, about a century ago, About the middle of the seventeenth century the co-heiresses of Pomeroy of Ingesdon married Thomas and Ford. Arthur Pomeroy, Viscount Harberton, of the kingdom of Ireland, is supposed to be descended from a younger son of the Pomeroys of Ingesdon." |
