This is a composite of information pulled together from various sources and cross-references. As one of those sources, 'The House of Gordon' (referred to below), appears either to have missed out a generation or two or to have mixed up a John with an Alexander, the following is not fully secure. However, the Earthlink web site referred to below seems to be clear about the family of General James.

This John was second son of his parents who married in 1602. One of his sisters married in 1632.
