| The following was found in 'The House of Arrnot and some of its branches' by James Arnot, published by William Brown in 1918, was found in/about 1998 (before this database was started) with, unfortunately, no other data being recorded from that book apparently because there was insufficient clarity on the pre-17th century generations that were then being researched. We hope to find that book again in due course. | |||||||||||||||

| 'Fife P&H' mentions that "Walter de Arnot, son of John, obtained the property in 1506". The implication is that Walter's father was the John who inherited Arnot from his brother Richard but the dates suggest that there may have been an intervening generation, another John, whom we insert as follows ... | |||||||||||||||

| Whereas it is normally the case that pedigrees become clearer from the beginning of the 17th century, for this family that is not the case. 'Fife P&H' tails off, mentioning that 'Lamont' reports that the following Walter's son Michael died in 1652, and reports that "Colonel Charles Arnot, fiar of that ilk, had a son David, who was entered as heir in 1670", without mentioning the baronetcy. We move on to using TCB as the main source. Note that several of the connections are presumptuous. | |||||||||||||||
| Walter Arnot 'of that ilk' of Arnot (a 1610) - continued above | |||||||||||||||
| m. Marie Balfour (dau of Sir James Balfour of Pittendreich and Burleigh) | |||||||||||||||
| 1. | Sir Michael Arnot 'of that ilk', 1st Bart of Arnot (a 1670, d before 1685) | ||||||||||||||
| m. (04.1612) Anne Browne (dau of Robert Browne of Balquharne and Auchingownie) | |||||||||||||||
| A. | Charles Arnot (dvp before 1652, Colonel) | ||||||||||||||
| m. Helen Reid (dau of James Reid of Pitlethie by Margaret Bruce) | |||||||||||||||
| i. | Sir David Arnot 'of that ilk', 2nd Bart of Arnot (dsp 01.01.1711) | ||||||||||||||
| BEB1841 (Arnot) and, according to TCB, Playfair's Baronetage, both report that the 3rd Bart, Lt. Gen. Sir John, was Sir David's son. However, TCB reports that Sir David dsp and that Sir John "whose relationship to the grantee is unknown; assumed the Baronetcy". We presume that Sir John must have been son of a younger son of the 1st Bart, viz: | |||||||||||||||
| ii. | ?? Arnot or Arnott | ||||||||||||||
| a. | Sir John Arnott of Abbotshall, later of York, 3rd Bart (d 04.06.1750, Lt. General) | ||||||||||||||
| m. Mary (bur 11.10.1745) | |||||||||||||||
| (1) | Sir John Arnott, 4th Bart (d c1762, Captain) | ||||||||||||||
| m. Eleanor | |||||||||||||||
| (A) | Anne Arnott | ||||||||||||||
| (2)+ | other issue - William (dsp before 1762, Colonel), 3 daughters | ||||||||||||||
BEB1841 (Arnot) and, according to TCB, Playfair's Baronetage, appear to miss out the 5th, 6th & 8th Barts reported by TCB, showing Lt. Col. Sir William (who d 1752), son of Sir John, 4th Bart, as the 5th Bart followed by Sir William (a 1811) as the 6th and last Bart. After Sir John, 4th Bart, TCB reports that Sir John, shown below as 5th Bart, "whose relationship to the grantee is unknown ... assumed the Baronetcy". We presume that Sir John must have been either grandson of a younger son of the 1st Bart or son of a younger son of the 3rd Bart. Somewhat arbitrarily, but noting that the 5th Bart appears to have spelled his name with two Ts, as had the 3rd Bart, we provisionally show the latter. |
|||||||||||||||
| iii. | ?? Arnott | ||||||||||||||
| a. | Sir John Arnott of Jersey, 5th Bart | ||||||||||||||
| iv. | Helen Arnot (a 1729) mentioned by TCB | ||||||||||||||
| m. James Livingstone | |||||||||||||||
| For a change (!!), we presume that the 6th Bart reported by TCB was descended from a younger son of the 1st Bart. | |||||||||||||||
| B. | ?? Arnot | ||||||||||||||
| i. | William Arnot of Auchmuir, later of Dalginch (d 06.10.1735) | ||||||||||||||
| TCB reports that William/Robert's "relationship to the grantee is unknown". | |||||||||||||||
| a. | Sir Robert Arnot of Dalginch, 6th Bart (dsp 03.06.1767) | ||||||||||||||
| b. | Sir William Arnot of Dalginch, 7th Bart (dsp 19.07.1782) | ||||||||||||||
| m. Mary Nash (b 19.02.1716/7, d 06.03.1783, dau of Richard Nash of Droitwich by Elizabeth, dau of George Treadaway) | |||||||||||||||
| Of the 8th Bart, TCB reports "his relationship with the grantee is unknown". We presume that he was descended from another younger son of the 1st Bart. | |||||||||||||||
| C. | ?? Arnot | ||||||||||||||
| i. | George Arnot (a 1728, vicar of Wakefield) | ||||||||||||||
| a. | Sir Matthew Robert Arnot, 8th Bart (dsp 1801) | ||||||||||||||
| b. | daughter | ||||||||||||||
| m. _ Robinson | |||||||||||||||
| (1) | George Robinson (Captain, RN) | ||||||||||||||
Of the 9th and last Baronet, TCB reports that he "is given in Playfair's Baronetage [S.], 1811, and in Burke's Baronetage, 1837 to 1840, as the then existing Baronet of this cratoin, but of him (if, indeed, he ever existed) nothing is known." We presume to connect him as follows ... |
|||||||||||||||
| ii. | ?? Arnott | ||||||||||||||
| a. | Sir William Arnot, 9th Bart (a 1811) | ||||||||||||||
| D. | Anne Arnot mentioned by 'Fife P&H', named by BLG1952 (Balfour of Balbirnie) | ||||||||||||||
| m. George Balfour, 1st of Balbirnie (d 1655, son of Martin of Lalethan) | |||||||||||||||
| E. | Isabel Arnot (dau of Sir Michael Arnot of that ilk, Bart) (a c1650) | ||||||||||||||
| m. George Lundie of Drum | |||||||||||||||
| 2. | daughter mentioned by 'Fife P&H' | ||||||||||||||
| m. (1662) John Alexander (son of the laird of Scaddoway) | |||||||||||||||
|

| Sir James Arnot of Fernie | |||||||||||||||
| m1. ?? | |||||||||||||||
| 1. | Sir Robert Arnot (eldest son of Sir James of Fernie) | ||||||||||||||
| m. (before 03.01.1642) Grisel Bruce (dau of George Bruce of Carnock) | |||||||||||||||
| Presumed parents of ... | |||||||||||||||
| A. | James Arnot of Fernie | ||||||||||||||

| Presumed to have been 2nd wife of Sir James, as she was aunt of Sir Robert's wife Grisel, was ... | |||||||||||||||
| m2. (1641) Anne Bruce (dau of Sir George Bruce of Carnock) | |||||||||||||||
Possibly connected to the above Sir James, as their granddaughter (thought to have been called Jean) was identified as cousin of her husband, were the following Robert and Margaret who were identified in TSP (Balfour of Burleigh) as parents of the Robert who married Margart Balfour. |
|||||||||||||||
| Robert Arnot of Newton | |||||||||||||||
| m. Margaret Averie (dau of John Averie, Bailie of Falkland) | |||||||||||||||
| 1. | Robert Arnot, younger of Newton, later Balfour, Lord of Burleigh (d 10.08.1663) | ||||||||||||||
| m. (1606) Margaret Balfour, Baroness Balfour of Burleigh (d 06.1639) | |||||||||||||||
| The descendants of this marriage are shown on Balfour2 pending clarification of Robert's ancestry. To show the connection, however, we repeat one of the daughters. | |||||||||||||||
| A. | Jean (?) Balfour | ||||||||||||||
| m. James Arnot of Fernie @@ above | |||||||||||||||
A prominent member of the Arnot family was ... |
|||||||||||||||
| Sir John Arnot of Birswick or Berswick, Provost of Edinburgh (a 1589) | |||||||||||||||

| 2. | Helen Arnot (dau of Sir John Arnot of Berswick) possibly of this generation | ||||||||||||||
| m. (04.09.1610) George Home of Manderston (a 1637) | |||||||||||||||
Another branch of the family was that of Balcormo which, according to 'Fife P&H', came into the family by marriage in 1518. |
