(1) There are towns/villages called Fenton in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northumberland, Staffordshire & Huntingdonshire/Cambridgeshire but, apart from the Nottinghamshire family covered by Fenton01, most of the Fenton families we have come across appear to have come from Yorkshire. BLG1862 (Fenton of Castelrigg) reports that "This family appears to have been very anciently settled in the neighbourhood of Leeds", mentioning a marriage of a Fenton in 1332. BLG18652 also suggests that "Of the same family it appears ... was Sir Geoffrey Fenton, secretary of state" (for Ireland) whom we show on Fenton01. Accordingly, we suspect that the Yorkshire families are cadets of the Nottinghamshire family - but this has not been proved. Unfortunately, we have yet to come across a source which has investigated (successfully) how these families fit together.
(2) The top section comes from Visitation (Yorkshire, 1584/5, Fenton of Crake).

BLG1863 (Part II, in Appendix, 'Family of Fenton') starts by saying that the following John was "of a common ancestry with the families of Underbank and Castelrigg" and claims, as its arms, the same as those of Fenton of Castelrigg.
John Fenton of Woodhouse Hill
1. James Fenton of Hunslet
  A. James Fenton of Glass House in Hunslet and of Carr House near Rotherham (b 29.06.1719) had issue - see note just below
  m. Rachel
BLG1863 (Part II, in Appendix, 'Family of Fenton') goes on to show James & Rachel as parents of James of Loversall (m. Thomasine Ibetson), Jane (m. Richard Lee), Sarah and the others whose parentage is shown differently by BLG1886 (Fenton) which starts with the following James. We give precedence to BLG1886 over BLG1863 partly on the presumption that the later edition had benefited from additonal research but also because certain details shown by BLG1886 are supported over the equivalents shown in BLG1863 as shown below.
James Fenton of Rothwell, Yorkshire (b 1692, d 03.1759)
m. Rachel (b 1691-2, d 23.02.1773)

  D. Rachel Fenton named by BLG1886 but not by BLG1863
  m. Thomas Jacques of Leeds named by BLG1886 but not by BLG1863
  E. Hellen Fenton
BLG1863 shows the daughter who married as follows as Rachel. We follow BLG1886 because the Kaye records (which does not giver her first name) identifies her father as William and not James whilst the Mainwaring records identify her as Eleanor (dau of William) which is 'close enough' to Hellen.
m1. Thomas Mainwaring of Goltho Hall
m2. Sir Richard Kaye, Bart (dsp 1810, Dean of Lincoln)
  F. Elizabeth Fenton (b 1750-1, d 01.02.1818)
