A web site on Hardwick Hall reports that the Hardwick family owned land there from the 13th century. We have seen, on a web site, that the coat of arms of the Hardwicks of Lindley was a differenced version of that of the Hardwicks of Hardwick Hall, indicating that its founder was a younger son of the family of Hardwick Hall. Visitation (Leicestershire, 1619, Apleby of Apleby) shows a John of Lindley as married to an Alice Apleby whose father was alive in 53H3 (1268-9) and nephew in 1331. That shows that the Lindley branch branched from the main line c1300. BHO (Magna Brittania, vol 5, Derbyshire (1817), General History - Gentry families extinct since 1500) reported that Visitation (Derbyshire, 1569), which we have not yet seen, took the Hardwicks of Hardwick Hall back 6 generations before the last John. We have yet to find a source which takes the Hardwick Hall line back any more than those 6 generations but that is probably not enough to go back to 1300. Accordingly, we start with some unnamed Hardwicks.
