| The inconsistencies between Visitation and Commoners/BLG1886 were at first thought to indicate that they covered different families. However, 'The Rulers of London', identified below, clearly identifies Sir Nathaniel as a son of Nicholas by Susan Ironside. We provisionally show the following as being one family BUT note that this may have to be revised in due course. Visitation starts with ... | |||||||||||||||
| Nicholas Herne of Tibenham, Norfolk | |||||||||||||||
| 1. | Richard Herne of London, Sheriff of London (d 24.02.1624) | ||||||||||||||
| Commoners/BLG1886 start with Richard (Sheriff of London in 1618), describing him as "of an ancient family in the city of London". Visitation identifies him only as an Alderman of London but has been known in other accounts not to refer to a sheriffdom. Visitation mentions just one marriage, to Alice Paske (mother of Nicholas, John & Richard). Commoners does not name his wife but BLG1886 identifies her as Susanna Woodward (mother of Nicholas). We presume to show that Richard married twice and provisionally follow Visitation in identifying Alice as mother of Nicholas.. | |||||||||||||||
| m1/2. Alice Paske (dau of John Paske of Cambridge) | |||||||||||||||
| A. | Nicholas Herne of London | ||||||||||||||
| Commoners/BLG1886 do not name either of Nicholas's wives and reports only that he had two sons, Basil and Sir Nathaniel. Visitation identifies his 1st wife as ... | |||||||||||||||
| m1. Elizabeth Hooker (dau of Nicholas Hooker of London) | |||||||||||||||
| i.+ | issue (a 1634) - Richard (b c1615), Nicholas, John, Robert, Elizabeth, Alice, Anne | ||||||||||||||
| Visitation identifies Nicholas's 2nd wife as Sarah, dau of Richard Ironsid of London (sic). 'The Rulers of London 1660-1689: A biographical record of the Aldermen and Common Councilment of the City of London' (Hackshaw-Hyatt, 1966, on www.british-history.ac.uk) identifies her as ... | |||||||||||||||
| m2. Susan Ironside (dau of Richard Ironside of London by Margaret Brook) | |||||||||||||||
| Visitation ends with the next generation, naming Nicholas's children by Sarah/Susan as Nathaniell, Samuell & James. 'The Rulers of London' provides more information on Nathaniel and also identifies Joseph as a son of this marriage. | |||||||||||||||
| viii. | Basil Herne of Hampstead (d 04.01.1692) mentioned by Commoners & BLG1886, not by Visitation | ||||||||||||||

| 'The Rulers of London' identifies Sir Joseph (son of Nicholas by Susan Ironside) as father of Elizabeth.
