Families covered: Finch of Eastwell, Finch of Icklesham, Finch of Netherfield, Finch of Winchilsea

(1) BP1934 reports Sir William Dugdale as opining that "this family is descended from a common ancestor with the Herberts, Earls of Pembroke: namely, Henry Fitz-Herbert, chamberlain to King Henry I". As reported on Herbert01, the alleged descent of the Earls of Pembroke from Henry the Chamberlain has been found to be spurious. Collins does not mention such a possible descent but starts with the following Herbert. BP1934 reports Leland as saying that "The Finches, that be now, say that their proper name is Herbert, and that with marriage of the Finche's heir, they took Finche's name." BP1934 starts with William of Netherfield (a 1430) who was "lineally descended from Vincent Herbert, otherwise Finch, of Netherfield, who lived there about the close of Edward II's reign" (1327). BP2003 suggests that it was the undemerntioned Henry who bought the Manors of Netherfield & Icklesham c1345-50. We suggest that the whole of the following (upper) section should be viewed with some caution.
(2) The spelling of Winchelsea/Winchilsea has varied over time. It appears that 'Winchilsea' was an old variation of the name of the place which is nowadays called 'Winchelsea' and that the title used the old spelling rather than the new spelling.
Herbert (a 1216, "a very prominent Baron in King John's reign and King Henry IIId's reign")
1. Matthew FitzHerbert, Sheriff of Sussex & Surrey (a 1211, d c1244?)
  A. Peter (dsp)
  B. Herbert in Sussex & Kent

  a. Vincent Herbert alias Finch
BP2003 starts with a Vincent who was "connected with (possibly as f-in-law), the change of name, whether due to marriage or otherwise, occurring by 1341". BP2003 then indicates (but does not specify) that Vincent was father of Henry (Mayor of Winchelsea in 1341) father of William, Sir Richard & Joane (Lady Scott). Collins adds a further 2 generations (of Vincents) between Henry & William, etc.. These generations are given in the Visitation.
