B1934 (Bonham) reports that "The family of Bonham is stated to have been settled at Wiltshire as early as 1300, Sir John Bonham being then knight of the shire, as was also his son Nicholas in 1356, and six more members of hte family were members of parliament and high sheriffs down to 1605. A branch of the family, from Wishford, Wilts., settled in Essex about 1480."

  a. (Sir) Thomas Bonham of Stanway Hall (b 1490, d 1532-3)
Noting that his dates come from various web sites, and so may not be reliable, this is presumed to have been the Sir Thomas who is mentioned by BP1934 as having been Sheriff of Essex & Hertfordshire in 1520 & 1526 and great-grandfather of a George Bonham of Stanway Hall (see below).
  m. Catherine Marney (dau of Henry Marney, Lord, by Thomazin Arundell)

VCH (Essex, vol 10, Stanway Manors) indicates that Thomas sold Stanway Manor in 1580.
  m. (Ann?) Bocking (sister of Edmond Bocking)
  (i) John Bonham had issue
BP1934 mentions a George Bonham of Stanway Hall as great-grandson of (the above) Sir Thomas. That George had issue (see lower section). Note that, if BP1934 was correct, that George would have been brother of this John.

  m. John Sydway of London
  (d) Anne Bonham

Visitation & Berry show only the above but various web sites show that Thomas (of Valence) had the following elder brothers, sons of William by Anne Babbington. Possibly sons of William's elder brother John??
  (f) George Bonham (4th son) had issue in Massachussetts, North America
  m. Ruth or Sarah Morton
(g)+ other issue - William, Nicholas, Samuel
  (2) John Bonham (dsp)
  (3) Elizabeth Bonham apparently of this generation

Identified by BP1934 as descended from George Bonham of Stanway Hall, great-grandson of Sir Thomas, was the following Samuel. IIn his section on Warren, Berry reports that Thomas of Valence (bpt 1636, shown above) had only one son, William (d infant), and 2 daughters. In his section on Bonham, Berry mentions that the following Samuel was descended from that same Thomas. Either one of these was wrong or Samuel was son of Thomas's daughter Elizabeth and changed his name from Skinner to Bonham. Alternatrively, assuming that Berry made a mistake, other options include that the following Samuel was son of a brother or cousin of that Thomas. It appears that there has been confusion between various members of this family.
