Families covered: Gibbs of Ballynora, Gibbes of Barbados, Gibbs of Bristol, Gibbs of Derry
[This page was launched as Gibbs02. It was renamed Gibbs03 on 19.11.23 as part of a review of the Gibbs family which led to the preparation of a new Gibbs02.]

(1) Those bits of the following that came from BP1934 were originally shown in a Temporary page on 06.07.11 when it was introduced with the following: "There are 3 sections on Gibbes families within Visitation (Somerset & Bristol, 1672) but we are not able to connect the following family with any of them even though it does look as though there was probably a connection with at least 2 of them." The first of those sections was on 'Gibbes of Bath' (no arms shown), the second on 'Gibbes of Bristol' (mentioned below), the third on another 'Gibbes of Bristol' (mentioned below). We reviewed & expanded that on 12.02.21 using some data on MGH (NS1, vol 4, see below) and launched this page, speculating on how the 2nd section fitted into the family. We reviewed that again on 15.03.21 when we used MGH (NS2, vol 1) which pulled the family together, covering the 3rd Visitation section and showing that our speculation on the 2nd Visitation section had been correct. The 1st section ('Gibbes of Bath') remains uncovered.
(2) Visitation (section 2, see above) identifies the arms for those Gibbes of Bristol as "Arg., three battle-axes sa." BP1934 identifies that branch's arms as "Per fess arg.and arm., three battle-axes sa.". Visitation (section 3) identifies the arms for those Gibbes of Bristol as "Arg., three halberds sa." As shown on Gibbs02, earlier members of the family used battle axes rather than halberds so using the latter is probably a means of differentiating the arms, implying that their's was a junior branch rather than a senior one.
