Families covered: Guise of Abloads (Ablodes) Court, Gyse of Asple Gise (Aspley Guise), Guise (Gyse) of Elmore, Guise of Highnam, Guise of Winterborne

BEB1841 reports that this family descended from "Sir William Gyse, a younger brother of an illustrious Norman family, (who,) following the fortunes of Duke William, came into England at the conquest". According to BP1934, the manor and lordship of Elmore came into the family in 1262 consequent to the marriage of Nicholas de Gyse with "a near kinswoman of John de Burgh, son of Hubert, Earl of Kent". Descended from Sir Anselm (a 1274), son of that Nicholas, was ...

BP1934 leaves out the next generation, thereby possibly indicating some uncertainty on the succession. Visitation carries on as follows as does BEB1841 which starts its continuous pedigree with this William. BEB1841 identifies William's wife as Mary, dau of William Ratsey of Colemore, but Visitation names her father Richard (of King's Norton, amended by note to Colmore, sic).

m1. Elizabeth Washington (dsp, dau of Sir Lawrence Washington of Garesden)
BEB1841 does not give the parentage of Christopher's 2nd wife (Rachel Corsellis) but reports that she was "of a noble Italian family". BP1934 reports that she was "dau. of Nicholas Corsellis of London, merchant, descended of a noble Italian family". TCB (vol 3, 'Guise of Elmore', p218), which provides some support for this line, identifies her as dau of Nicholas Corsellis of London by a dau of Sir Thomas Cambell of Clay Hall, later 1st Bart. However, TCB (vol 3, 'Cambell of Clay Hall', 286) shows that that Thomas m1. (06.07.1641) Hester, dau of Nicholas Corsellis of London, and the dates make it questionable that this Christopher could have married their daughter. We suspect that MGH, used for the Corsellis family, is right in showing Christopher's wife as ...
