| 'HamiltonHistory' reports that, when James died, his estates passed to the family of his cousin Mary, shown below as married to William Nisbet, but the title passed separately. William Hamilton (above) claimed the title as senior representative of the Udston family but Scottish Law set that the succession passed not to (the descendants of) the eldest brother of the James who was grandfather of the 2nd Lord but to (the descendants of) his next immediate younger brother, both being brothers of the mother of the 1st Lord. This led to the title passing to Robert Hamilton of Wishaw (de jure 6th Lord), successor to William Hamilton, 1st of Wishaw (below), but that was not recognised until after Robert's death so the next person to both assume the title and be accepted as such was Robert's son, William Hamilton, 7th Lord Belhaven. | |||||||||||||||
