Families covered: Kinninmonth of Callinch, Kinninmonth of Craighall, Kinninmonth of Kinninmonth (Kinninmont of Kinninmont)
[Parts of this page, based on ER & MacFarlane, were originally shown on a draft version of this page which was launched on 04.01.05. They were moved here following review & expansion using RedBookScot.]

As mentioned above, the draft of this page was produced at the beginning of 2005. However, some of the following upper section was held on a Temporary page, separate from the draft version of this page, as it related to ancestors of the Kinnear family as well as of the Kinninmonth family (though the connection to the Kinnears was not completed at that time). It was based on "information kindly provided by Elsie Ritchie (genealogist of Traill and other families, 16.04.04)".
Michael
1. Simon
  A. Alan
ER identifies Alan as ancestor of Kinnear of that ilk. Our downloaded copy of 'Balmerino and its abbey' (Rev. James Campbell, 1867, p390), which is used to support our page on the Kinnear family, shows "Alioin Kinneir. 1124" handwritten above the following William. We presume to make the connection.
  i. William de Kiner (a temp William the Lion who r. 1166-1144)
  B. Simon (archdeacon of Aberdeen)
  C. Matthew, Bishop of Aberdeen (d 1199)
  D. Odo the steward (d c1195)
  i. Adam de Kinninmonth
Except for the linkage to the Kinnear family, the above was what was shown on a temporary page on 04.01.05. Starting with Adam, the following formed the upper section of the draft version of this page that was launched on the same day.
a. John de Kinninmonth
  (1) Elias de Kinninmonth (a 1280)
  (A) Elias de Kinninmonth
  (B) John de Kinninmonth, Bishop of Brechin (d 1327)
  (C) Adam de Kinninmonth (a 1303)
  (i) Alexander de Kinninmonth (d before 04.1392)
ER does not name or date Alexander. That information comes from MacGregor who starts with Odonis father of Ade father of John father of Helius then reports that "The next of the family to appear on record was" this Alexander father of Elieus (who m. Elizabeth Elphinstone).
  (a) Sir Eliseus Kinninmonth of Ceres (b c1370, d 1434) - continued below --
  m. Elizabeth Elphinstone
  ii. Elias de Kinninmonth

Sir Eliseus Kinninmonth of that ilk of Ceres (b c1370, d 1434) - continued above
m. (mcrt 26.04.1392) Elizabeth Elphinstone (niece of Sir George Leslie, Lord of Rothes)
1. Sir James Kinninmonth of that ilk (d before 05.10.1445)
  m. Christina de Erskine
  A. Sir John Kinninmonth of that ilk of Craighall
m. Isabella de Levingston (natural dau of Sir Robert de Levingston of Drumry)
2. James Kinninmonth (b c1430)
  A. Sir Andrew Kinninmonth of that ilk of Craighall (b c1452, d before 05.05.1514)
(1) MacFarlane shows this Andrew as having died in May 1538 with the Andrew whom we show as having died in that month as son rather than brother of the William below who died at Flodden. We follow ER and MacGregor, the latter reporting that his grandson Andrew's succession was recognised on 05.05.1514.
(2) The marriage to Agnes Wemyss is not mentioned by either MacFarlane or ER but is by MacGregor, supported by cross-reference from the Wemyss records. However, MacGregor gives different dates for the marriages and so shows the first 2 in a different order (m1. (mcrt 13.04.1482) Agnes Wemyss m2. (c1487) Janet Clephane m3. (by 23.03.1501) Elizabeth Halkett). Provisonally, we follow the order of marriages we had drafted before we used MacGregor's work.
(3) Our attribution of Andrew's children between his wives follows MacGregor although, as he does not show which of the earlier children was by Janet or Agnes, we presume that all of Andrew's children before his 3rd marriage were (as suggested by ER) by Janet Clephane.
m1. (c1475) Janet Clephane (dau of George Clephane of Carslogie)
  i. William Kinninmonth (dvp Flodden 09.09.1513)
  m. Marjorie Gray
  a. Andrew Kinninmonth of that ilk of Craighall (d 1545) --
m1. (mcrt 04.07.1526) Janet Lindsay (dau of Sir John Lindsay of Pitcruvie) --
  m2. Margaret Abercrombie
m3. (mcrt 25.04.1540) Elizabeth Barclay (dau of David Barclay of Collairnie)
ii. James Kinninmonth of Callinch (a 1520, 1548, 3rd son) mentioned only by MacGregor
ER shows a Patrick Kinninmonth a generation earlier, showing him as father of an unnamed Kinninmonth of Callinch (b c1495) who married (c1520) Margaret Bruce. We follow MacGregor in showing the Callinch branch starting here. Note that he does not name James's wife who might have been ...
  m. (c1520) Margaret Bruce
  a. Patrick Kinninmonth of Callinch
  m. (by 17.03.1566) Helen Wood
  (1) Walter Kinninmonth of Callinch & Kilduncan (d c1654)
  (2) Gideon Kinninmonth
  (3) Sara Kinninmonth
m. (mcrt 06.1593) Robert Arnot (son/heir of Peter of Balcormo)
  iii. Christian Kinninmonth
  m. (mcrt 25.02.1503) William Hay of Gurdie
  v. Janet Kinninmonth
  m. (mcrt 25.06.1508) Thomas Porterfield (son/heir of John of Chappelton)
v.+ other issue - John (a 1516), Alexander (d Pinkie 09.1547, Vicar of Panbride) mentioned only by MacGregor
m2. (mcrt 13.04.1484) Agnes Wemyss (dau of Sir John Wemyss of Strathardle, later of Wemyss)
m3. (c1485) Katherine (Elizabeth?) Halkheid or Halkherde or Halkett
  vii. Andrew Kinninmonth (b c1486, d 05.1538)
In our draft version of this page we followed ER rather than MacFarlane and showed this as the Andrew who was father of Patrick (of that ilk) of Craighall, shown on the continuation page as ancestor of the later heads of the family. We now follow MacGregor (and MacFarlane) as showing Patrick's father above, as this Andrew's nephew.
  viii. Euphemia Kinninmonth (b c1507)
MacGregor suggests that this was the Euphemia who married Stephen Duddingston of Sandford. However, he was the grandson of the William Duddingston of Sandford who married Euphemia, dau of the above Andrew Kinninmonth of that ilk of Craighall, nephew of this Euphemia. ER suggests that this Euphemia married ...
  m. Alexander Traill in Dundee (b 1504, d before 1588)
ix.+ other issue - Mariota/Maria, Isobel, Egedia, Christine
Probably of this generation, though by which marriage is not known (unless she was the same person as Mariota/Maria above), was ...
  xiii. Margaret Kinninmonth
  m. David Bruce of Wester Kennet (a 1513)
  B. William Kinninmonth (a 1509) mentioned by MacGregor but not by ER
