The family name is usually pronounced 'Marchbanks'. The name is thought to have come from lands near Lochmaben in Dumfriesshire which belonged to Marjorie Bruce, dau of King Robert I of Scotland ('the Bruce') and mother of King Robert II, the first Stewart king.
