The above comes from HTSK (vol 2, 'Parishes: Downe'), which identifies William as ancestor of Petley of Filston in Shoreham & Riverhead in Sevenoke, supported by Berry. BLG1886 reports that the family "was originally seated at Downe (in Kent) and afterwards at Halsted and Riverhead." HTSK (vol 3, 'Parishes: Halsted') reports that William, second son of Richard, obtained Halsed by marriage to Alyce Bourchier but is unclear whether or not that William was of this generation or the next. We are following Berry in showing that William in the next generation rather than this one.
  m. Margaret
  i. John Petley
ii. William Petle or Petley of Halsted, Kent (d 1528)
  m. Alyce Bourchier, heiress of Halsted
HTSK (vol 3, 'Parishes: Halsted') reports that William & Alyce left 2 sons: Stephen & Thomas, "who was of Vielston, in Shoreham, and was ancestor of the branch of this family settled there, and of those now remaining at Riverhead, in Sevenoke". This seems to confirm that this William was the first mentioned by Visitation (1619). Berry supports that view.

  (i) Michael Petley of Filston (bpt 11.03.1592, dvp bur 27.09.1628)
Visitation (1619) shows Michael and the undermentioned as children of this marriage. However, Visitation (Sir George Armytage 1906, Kent, 1663-8, Petley), which provides the following, shows Michael as son of Elizabeth Came. We follow the former as HTSK (vol 2, 'Parishes: Chelsfield) refers to Ralph as "his only son, by his second wife". This is supported by Berry & MGH.

m2. Elizabeth Came (dau of Randolph Came or Cam of London, relict of George Beresford of Squerries (son/heir of Michael))
(viii) Ralph Petley of Riverhead - continued below
BLG1886 confuses things slightly by showing that Ralph m. Elizabeth Cam rather than being her son. Berry omits a generation, showing this as the Ralph who married . Jane Selyard. MGH, supported by Visitation (1663), shows this Ralph's wife as ...
