John Howland of London | |||||||||||||||
m. Anne Greenway (dau of _ Greenway or Greenaway of Clay, m2. John Quarles) ## see here ##
1. | Richard Howland, Bishop of Peterborough (bpt 26.09.1542, bur 06.1600)
2. | John Howland of London & Wicken, near Newport (bpt 10.08.1541)
m. Emme Ryvell (dau of Nicholas Ryvell of London, sister/heir of Robert of London)
A. | John Howland of Newport, Essex
m. Priscilla Nightingale (dau of Jeffery Nightingale of Newport)
Except to show John's wife as Blanche Nightingall, the above is supported by Visitation (London, 1633, 'Howland') which ends with their son Geoffrey who m. Grisogan, dau of John Langley. The above is also supported by 'A History of the Parish of St. Laurence Poutney, London' (Rev. H.B. Wilson, 1831, 'Pedigree of Quarles and Howland', p234+), with thanks to a contributor (DS, 10.01.20) for drawing that to our attention. That ends by identifying John & Priscilla's son as Jeffrey of Streatham, the grandfather of the Elizabeth who married Wriothesley Russell, Duke of Bedford. We show an alternative parentage for that Jeffrey (Geoffrey) ## below ## and instead follow Visitation (Surrey, 1662-8, 'Howland') which, having started with John of Wicken father of this John, provides the following.

i. | John Howland (b 1622-3)
We had thought that this may have been the John Howland of Streatham who was father of Elizabeth, Duchess of Bedford. However, the note below (under Geoffrey) suggests that this John dvpsp before 1648.

m1. Thomas Roberts (dvp 23.01.1639)
TCB (vol 1, Roberts of Glassenbury) identifies Elizabeth as "da. of Sir Matthew Howland, and sister and h. of Sir John Howland, of Streatham". We suspect that the reference to "sister" is wrong and should be to "niece". We speculate that this was the Elizabeth who (also) married ...
m2. (1641) Humfrey Scott of Conghurst (bpt 25.07.1614)
B. | Geoffrey Howland of Tootic Bec in Streatham
Geoffrey is not mentioned by Visitation. VCH (Surrey, vol 4, Parishes: Streatham) reports that in 1648 Sir John (son of Sir Giles) sold the manor of Tooting Bec to his younger brother Geoffrey who was father of John father of the Elizabeth who became Duchess of Bedford. See ## above ## for an alternative parentage for Geoffrey (Jeffrey).
