| (1) We have found online the following 2 good-looking additional sources on this family: * 'Pedigree of Sotheron, vel Sotheran, etc. of Mitotn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Holm-in-Spaldingmore, Darrington, Ampleforth, oswaldkirk, etc.' (compiled by Mr. Charles Sotheran, of Torquay), within'Pedigrees of the County Families of Yorskshire (vol 3 - North and East Riding' by Joseph Foster (1874); and * 'Genealogical Memoranda relating to the Family of Sotheron ...' by Charles Sothean (1871), Unfortunately, these were not clear enough to read easily. It is possible that we will find better copies in due course and then be able to supplement the following (2) MGH indicates that the family name was often spelt as Sotheran or Southeran with other variations. For most of the time, we keep to 'Sotheron' for the sake of simplicity but do use 'Southeran' or 'Sootheran' for a later branch of the family. (3) MGH (p137) identifies the arms of Sheriff Stephen (a 1561) as "ar. a chev. between three branches of southerwood vert, in chief a crescent sa.". |
