This page is still being researched. It has NOT yet been launched formally into the Database but is shown here TEMPORARILY (albeit for an uncertain length of time pending further research), partly to record connections that we fear we might otherwise lose sight of and partly in the hope that one or more visitors to the site will contribute information that will enable us to develop our information on the families covered in this page to a standard that would support release of a dedicated page in the Database.

Visitation suggests that Robert was alive temp Henry 7 (who r. 1485-1509), which would have been inconsistent with the connection but then shows that Judith's great-grandnephew d 20H7 which would suggest that "Henry 7" was wrong (sb Henry 5 or 6? which not be inconsistent with the connection).

Our first draft on this family came wholly from Griffith. Thanks to a site visitor (CV, 29.11.09) who provided us with extracts from "Notes on the History of Tidworth" by J. Moloney (1982) and "A History of Tidworth and Tedworth House" by David J. Croman (1991) and drew our attention to Visitation (London, 1633-5, Smith (p243)). These have enabled us to expand & improve Griffith's version as follows.
Peter Smith of London (fishmonger)
1. Thomas Smith of London, 1st of Tedworth in Hampshire (a 1634, alderman)
  m. (1608) Jane Robinson (dau of John Robinson of London)
  A. John Smith of London & Tedworth (b c1611, d 1690) the first mentioned by Griffith
Visitation ends showing John as married to Mary Wright. Griffith starts with a John Smith who married Anne, dau of Nicholas Stuart of Hartley Maudit, shown as mother of Thomas, Speaker John & Ann (m. Sir Samuel Dashwood). However, Visitation (Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, 1686, Steward of Hartley Maudit), shows that the Anne Steward who m. John Smith of Tidworth did so in 1679 and dsp 1680 whilst the Anne who m. Sir Samuel Dashwood is shown by BP1934 (Dashwood) as having married him in 1670. Both Moloney & Croman make it clear that this John, son of Thomas & Jane, was the father of Speaker John & Anne.
  m. Mary Wright (dau of Edmund Wright ('of Swakeleys'), Lord Mayor of London) shown by Visitation as wife of John, presumed mother of ...
  i. Thomas Smith (dsp)
ii. John Smith of South Tedworth (b 1655, d 30.09.1723, Speaker of House of Commons, Chancellor of the Exchequer)
Although none of the sources mention a marriage prior to Anne Strickland, we presume that this John was first married to ...
m1. (01.09.1679) Anne Steward (b 15.09.1652, dsp 08.09.1680, dau of Nicholas Steward of Hartley Maudit)
m2. (c1684) Anne Strickland (dau of Sir Thomas Strickland, 2nd Bart of Boynton)
a. William Smith of Tedworth, Sheriff of Carnarvonshire (dsp 1773)
  b. Mary Smith (b 1688)
  m. (1705) Robert Sawyer Herbert (dsp 01.04.1769, son of Earl of Pembroke)
  c. Harriet Theodosia Smith (b 1699, d 23.01.1773)
  m. (23.04.1724) Thomas Assheton of Ashley (bpt 30.09.1678, bur 09.07.1759)
