Families covered: Bellew of Bellewstown, Bellew of Castle Martyr, Bellew of Duleek, Bellew of the Roche, Bellew of Rogerstown

Commoners (vol 2, 'Bellew of Stockleigh Court', p532) reports that "This ancient family, which is supposed to be of Italian origin, the name still existing in Italy, was founded in England, by Bellau, or De Bella Aqua, a Norman baron, who appears on the roll of Battel Abbey, as marshal to the Conqueror's army." Banks's 'Baronies in Fee' (vol 2, 1853, p44) reports that "This family is considered to be of Norman extraction, its name being mentioned in the famous Battle Abbey Roll; but ... that roll is not without suspicion of much falsification". BP1934 reports that "This Anglo-Norman family was seated in Yorkshire in 1100". It is not known how the following Adam was connected to Lord John de Bella Aqua or Bellew of Carlton whom we show here. We hope to source information on the early generations of the family in due course. BP1934 mentions ...
Sir Adam de Bella Aqua (Bellew) (a 1210)
1. ?? de Bella Aqua or de Bellew
  (1) BE1883 suggests that "the common ancestor of the various families of the name" in Ireland was a Roger de Bellew and that "The intermediate Lords of Bellewstown and Duleek inter-married with the D'Arcys, Fitzgeralds (Earls of Kildare), St. Lawrence, Flemings, Gernons, and Prestons."
(2) Uncertain on the number of intervening generations. This was possibly the father of ...
  A. Roger Bellew of Bellewstown "in the Parish of Devilike in Com. Midie in Ireland" the first mentioned by Vivian
  i. John Bellew of Bellewstown
BP1934 identifies a descendant of the above Sir Adam as John Bellew of Bellewstown, co. Galway, from whom 4th in descent was the undermentioned John (a 1402). The intervening generations are as named by Vivian.
  a. James Bellew
  (1) John Bellew
  m. Alice Dalton
  (A) John Bellew
There is confusion on this (and the preceding?) and at least the next generation. Vivian shows this John as father of 2 Johns by Mabren Darcy with the elder son John (m. Rose Brytt) as father of a John and a James who, by Isott Creuse, was ancestor of the Bellews in Devon and the younger son John (m. Lady Margaret Howith) as ancestor of the Barons & Baronets. Tuckett's 'Devonshire Pedigrees (p157), shows this John as father by Mabren Darcye of John father, by Rose Brett, of the John who m. Lady Margaret Howith and a James who m. Isott Crews. Vivian seems to have at least 1 generation too many whilst Tuckett has 1 more generation than Vivian! BP1934 reports that "fourth in descent from" the above John of Bellewstown was the following John who had 2 sons both called John.
(i) Sir John Bellew of Castle Roche (a 1402)

((2)) daughter possibly of this generation
  m. Walter Plunkett of Bewley (Beaulieu)
  (b) John (or James?) Bellew of Bellewstown (twin with above John)
  m. Isott Creuse or Crews

Sir Walter Bellew of the Roche and Bellewstown (d 1542) - continued above
1. ?? Bellew (dvp)
BP1934 says the following Sir John succeeded his grandfather without providing any information on the intervening generation. BE1883 names the person who succeeded in 1542 as father of the following Sir John, being another Sir John who married Margaret Plunkett, dau of Sir Oliver Plunkett of Beaulieu. BE1883 appears to have confused the generations.
