Families covered: Crathorne of Crathorne (Craythorne of Craythorne), Crathorne in Lincolnshire, Crathorne of Saltfleetby

The Visitations (including Walker's report thereon) provide a pedigree for this family going back to the time of William the Conqueror but we were wary of it even before we saw what VCH had to say about the family. For interest's sake we provide that pedigree but show it in italics to show our doubts about its validity. The Visitations start with ...

The first of this family to be mentioned by VCH was ...
Stephen le Teuler of York
1. John le Teuler of Crathorne (a 1310)
  A. Sir William de Crathorne (d Neville's Cross 1346) - alternate ancestry shown above
  (1) VCH mentions only one wife for Sir William, Isabel, who appears to have been his widow. VCH reports that "He had a son William, who doubtless succeeded him. The heir of the younger William is not known, but was possibly the Nicholas de Crathorne who witnessed charters in 1362 and 1365." Foster & Walker both show his 1st wife as Isabel Clervaux and 2nd as Margaret Russell but disagree on their issue (as reported above). Neither mention a son called William. VCH refers to one charter dated 1370 "in which Nicholas de Crathorne, son of William de Crathorne, kt., made a grant to his son John", notes that a Thomas Crathorne had letters of administration for his brother Nicholas de Crathorne in 1395, and mentions a charter dated 10 Hen.IV (1408-9) which identified Thomas as lord of Crathorne.
(2) Noting the above, we suspect that there were 2 generations of Williams. We have pulled together the following but note that it is speculative and has not been proved.
  m. Isabel Clervaux (a 1347, dau of Sir John Clervaux)
  i. William de Crathorne
m. Margaret Russell (dau of John Russell of Rowlesby or Rouseby)
  a. Nicholas de Crathorne of Crathorne (d by 1395)
  m. Anne Lascelles (dau of Sir Roger Lascelles)
  (1) John de Crathorne (a 1370, dsp?)
  b. Thomas de Crathorne of Crathorne (d before 1425)
VCH identifies this Thomas as probably the Thomas who, with his wife Elizabeth, "has a monumental inscription in the parish church" and that, "If this is so, he was succeeded before 1425 by John de Crathorn". Somewhat arbitrarily, we ignore the first part (p490) of the pedigree shown by Ord on this family before this generation.
m1. _ Bagot (dau/heir of Peter Bagot son of Peter (or Richard) of Crathorne) named Elizabeth by Ord
  (1) Bryan Craythorne (a 1407, dvp?, 2nd son)
  m. _ Pickering (dau of Sir John Pickering)
  (A) John Craythorne (d 11.03.1483) - continued below
  m. Katherine Brigwell (dau of Thomas Brigwell or Britville or Briville)
(2)+ other issue - Robert (dsp), Guy, Eustace, Richard, Thomas
Ord names these siblings of Brian and identifies Thomas as ancestor of the Crathornes of Sallaby, Lincolnshire. We suspect that that is confusion with the Thomas we show below as younger son of his nephew John (d 1483) who was ancestor of the Crathornes of Saltfleetby.
m2. Elizabeth Fairfax (dau of Thomas Fairfax, sister of Guy)
  c. Matthew Craythorne (a 1377, accountant to Edward III's exchequer)
  m. _ Laburne (dau of Sir Henry Laburne)
  d.+ other issue

(1) As noted ## above, Walker shows this Thomas as of an earlier generation. Provisionally we follow Foster in showing him here but note that the (few) identifiiable dates suggest that he may well have been of an earlier generation.
