Families covered: Edmonstone of Duntreath, Edmonstone of Edmonstone, Edmonstone of Ednam (Edenham)

The family web site reports that "The legend of a knight called Edmund coming from Hungary with Queen Margaret, wife of Malcolm III, cannot be substantiated. More factually it seems almost certain that the Edmonstones descend from the Setons, a family of Norman extraction".

Sir William's wife, Matilda Stewart, is identified by TSP (Albany) as dau of Sir James 'More', younger son of Murdach Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany & Earl of Fife. Guthrie Smith, supported by the Edmonstone site, reported that this was wrong, being based on an error by George Crawford, and that she was daughter of Sir James's elder brother Walter. BP1934 supports this, identifying her as "grand-dau of the last Regent, Duke of Albany, and sister of the celebrated Chancellor, Lord Avondale".
