Families covered: Herries of Little Culloch, Herries of Mabie, Herries of Maidenpaup, Herries of Terregles

TSP (Herries) reports that, although the name of Herries was in Scotland long before the first person mentioned below, possibly having derived from the family of Heriz (aka Hercy and Harris) who lived in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire from the 11th century, it has been suggested that the first of this family was a younger brother of the Count of Vendome who (the younger brother) accompanied King David II on his return to Scotland in 1341. It appears that the records of the House of Vendome, which merged into the House of Bourbon in the late 14th century, do not confirm this (although that fact does not disprove it either).
Sir John Herries/Heryz of Terregles (a 1366, d 27.02.1386 ?)
m. Margaret (possibly dau of Lord Boyd ?)
According to TSP, some sources indicate that there was an intervening generation or two at this point, an additional Sir John(s). Whilst one more generation is quite possible, the dates make the intervention of two more generations to be unlikely.
