Douglas ('Seton of Touch') starts with Sir William, showing him as father of John & Alexander by Catharine, dau of Sir William Sinclair of Herdmanstoun, whom TSP shows as wife of his elder son. TSP ('Winton'), which would probably have considered Douglas, reports that "There is some indication that Sir William was twice married; if so, the name of his first wife is unknown, but Jonet Fleming, elder daughter of Sir David Fleming of Biggar, was the mother of his second son" and notes that the suggestion (by Maitland) that Katharine Sinclare was mother of the sons "is proved to be erroneous in the case of Alexander, and is probably equally so as regards John". We speculate that mother not only of Alexander but also of John was ...

TSP (Huntly) reports that the 1st Earls's second wife was Elizabeth Crichton but, noting that Elizabeth survived him, reports also that the Earl is thought to have married a daughter of Cumming of Altyre as his third or fourth wife. A contributor (RS, 20.01.04), after looking into the IGI, suggests that he married the Cumming daughter about 1434 which would make her his second wife and so, assuming that she died within a few years, avoid the discrepancy. We follow that suggestion but note that TCP (Huntly) does not mention this marriage. In Douglas's 'Baronage of Scotland', used for the Cumming family, Jean is described as Alexander's fourth wife.
