Families covered: Shafto of Little Bavington, Shafto of Newcastle, Shafto of Whitworth

(1) Johnson mentions a Robert de Shaftowe (1240-45) and a William de Schafthowe of Little Bavington (a 1300, m. Isabel, dau of William Bataill de Babinton) and an Odnell Schafthowe (who, in 1339, "settled his lands at Little Bavington on his son Thomas Schaftowe") and then Thomas Schaftowe who m (c1339) Matilda, dau/heir of John Battell. Johnson then shows a Thomas Shaftow whose son & heir was Thoams Schaftow of Little Bavington (a 1427). It is likely that some but not all of these should be mentioned below, possibly as ancestors of a wife of one of those referred to below, but the first mentioned and shown as connected to the later generations was the William who married the dau/heiress of Bavington of Little Bavington.
