HoP reports that "The Ladbrokes were a Warwickshire family. Sir Robert's parentage has not been ascertained". However, it also identifies Sir Robert as "nephew of Sir Henry Marshall, ld. mayor of London". It is not known if the Marshall connection came through his father or his mother.
