Families covered: Maclachlan of Strathlachan

BLG1886 reports that "The ancestor of the family, and from whom the clan takes its name, was Lachlan Mor, who lived in the 13th century, and whose son, Gillespie, or Archibald, appears on record as in possession of the lands of Strath, or Strathlachlan, and which have remained in the family ever since." That is supported by Wikipedia which reports that "Tradition gives Lachlan Mor a descent from an Irish prince of the O'Neill dynasty, Anrothan Ua Neill, son of Aed, son of Flaithbertach Ua Neil". That appears to be the same person as Aodh Anrachan, son of Aodh Athlamh son of Flathartach An Frostain, who was father of Aodh (or Hugh) Alainn father of the following Giollachriosd who is identified on 'Irish Pedigrees' (John O'Hart, 1892 (5th edition), vol 1, 'MacSweeny (sic) (No. 1), Of Fanad', p558) as "ancestor of MacLaghlan, MacLachlan, MacLaughlan, and other families, in Scotland". Wikipedia reports that Anrothan died 1036. From that we suggest that his grandson Giollachriosd lived in the 11th century.

Wikipedia mentions a Gilchrist Maclachlan who witnessed a charter in 1230; that "The first documentary evidence of the clan's ownership of lands was recorded in 1292, when Gilleskel Maclauchlan received a charter of his lands in Ergadia"; and that Gillespie "was dead by 1322". We assume that there were 3 successive generations of Gilchrists/Gillespies.
