Families covered: Portal of Abingdon, Portal of Ashe Park, Portal of Bagnols (Languedoc), Portal of Freefolk, Portal of Laverstoke

According to BLG1863, this family was originally Spanish but, since 1094, "their history has been inseparably associated with that of the city of Toulouse". They fled to England in 1699 after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. A booklet entitled 'The Portal Family', being an extract from 'The London Review, No. XXXVI, July 1862' which was printed for private circulation in 1863 and which can be found at archive.org, provides more history on this family but does not add to the pedigree found in the sources named below. BLG1863 provides a continuous pedigree from Jean Francois Portal (1642-1705), identifying him as "the fifteenth in the direct line of descent from Oldric de Portallao", who was the Chief Magistration of Toulouse in 1204. BP1934 starts its continuous pedigree from the following Raymond who may therefore be considered to have been 8th in descent from that Oldric.
