(1) Wikipedia ("Quarles, Norfolk") reports that "The name Quarles originates from the name Huerueles which is old English for the place of hwerfel. The name is thought to (have) originally referred to a prehistoric stone circle which was thought to be near-by although no trace of any such feature remains today."
(2) www.geni.com provides a pedigree going back to the 12th century (see here) which, unfortunately, does not identify its sources. It shows the undermentioned John, who m. Amy Plumsted, as son (by Agnes Elizabeth Chaworth) of Thomas of Ufford son (by Catherine Ufford) of William of Ufford (1390-1420) son of William de Quarles son of Ralph son of John son of Nicholas de Querueles son of John (b c1202) son of ?? Querueles of Quarles. www.geni.com (here) mentions a report that "William Quarels, Lord of the Barony of Quarles, ... came in 1420 from Scotland and settled in Northamptonshire, where he m. Catherine Ufford of the family of the Earls of Suffolk". It is not clear how that can be consistent with the pedigree that shows that his ancestors were of Quarles in Norfolk. That apparent inconsistency, along with some odd dates (such as one of the brothers of that John (who m. Amy Plumsted) being shown as born some years after his father died) and the naming of the father of that John as Thomas whereas Visitation (Northamptonshire) names him as another John, makes us wary of including all that www.geni.com provides.
(3) Wilson, used for Quarles2, starts his pedigree with William Quarles "of Northamptonshire, afterwards of Gresham, in Norfolk, (who) was lineally descended from William Quarles of Ufford, in the county of Northampton, who lived in the reign of King Henry the Vth" (who r. 1413-1422) and then shows his son, by Emma Buck of Blakney, as the John of London (d 12.1577) who married 3 times (m1. Alice Handley m2. Dorothy Darrell m3. Agnes Greenway) and had many children. Visitation (1612) starts with George of Ufford (a temp Henry VIII, who r. 1509-1547) with that John of London shown as his 2nd son.

John is not mentioned by Visitation (Northamptonshire). www.geni.com shows a John (draper) as son of George (by Margaret Browne) and brother of Francis of Ufford but does not show any family for him. As mentioned above, Wilson, which provides the continuation, shows him as son of William of Northamptonshire, then Gresham in Norfolk, by Emma Buck of Blakeney, Norfolk. Wilson shows John as "of the parish of St. Peter le Poor, London" but does not mention his trade. Taking all that together, this connection should be viewed as supported by Visitation (Essex) only.
