Families covered: Monckton (Monkton) of Cavil (Cavell), Monckton of Hodroyd

BP1934 reports that "The pedigree of the ancient family of de Monckton has been carried back to Dolfin de Monketon, 1167. The seat of the family was at Moor Monketon, between York and Boroughbridge. ... The de Monketon family continued to reside at Moor Monketon till 1389, when they left and also ceased to use the "de" before their name. They migrated ot Ottringham, near Hull, and later to Cavill, near Howden, on marriage with its heiress." Other than in that introduction, BP1934 spells the family seat "Cavil" rather than "Cavill". Visitation uses "Cavell" except for the original family, whose heiress brought the place into the Monckto family, whose name is spelt "Cavill".
