Families covered: Nicholl in Essex, Nicolls of Faxton, Nicholl of Hadham, Nicolls of Hardwick
(1) As BEB1841 reports: "The name of this family was spelt at different periods, Nycol, Nicoll, Nicolls, Nicholls, and Nicholl." Somewhat arbitrarily, with apologies to any family members who would prefer otherwise, we use "Nicholls" for the page titles but, for each branch, follow the relevant sources wherever possible. (2) Commoners reports that "The Nicholls are stated to derive from Nicholas de Albini, alias Nigell, or Nicholl, who came over from Normandy in the time of Edward the Confessor, and families of the name, written at various periods Nicholl, Nicholls, Nicol, and Nicoll, flourished in Cornwall, Essex, and Northamptonshire, bearing the same arms, and all deriving from a common ancestor". BEB1841 adds that "The exact same coat armour was also used by the Nicholls, of Llantwitt Major, in Glamorganshire, and by the Nicholls of Cornwall, who derived probably from a common ancestor with the Northamptonshire family, but which branch is the senior it is difficult to ascertain." The arms of these families were: 'Sa., three pheons Arg.' (3) Arbitrarily, we start with the Northamptonshire branch. |
