Alexander Nisbet, the heraldist (one of whose works is referred to on Nisbet1), reports that Nisbet of Carfin "is a branch of the Nisbets of Greenholm". MGH refers to that and reports that "This descent cannot be proved from documents, but the Carfin family can be traced by a complete chain of evidence back to" the first James mentioned below. We speculate, arbitrarily, that the connection came as follows.
