We assume that BPGS2001 is the result of further research after 'The Lay of the Turings' for it disagrees with the early part of the pedigree shown by 'The Lay'. We follow BPGS but identify where it differs from 'The Lay'. For the earliest generations, that is done most easily by simply reporting that 'The Lay' starts with Andrew Turing (a 1316) father of Adam (a 1325) father of William (a 1342) father of Thomas father of Andrew (a 1388, 1417) father of John (a 1430, 1493) who married Janet Hay. BPGS2001 shows those earliest generations as follows, staring with the following WIlliam who is identified as "possibly kinsman of Adam Turin" (a 1323).
William de Turin of Foveran, Aberdeenshire (a temp David II who r. 1329-1371) probably father of ...
1. Andrew Turin of Foveran (a 1388, 1424) succeeded by ...
  A. John Turin of Foveran (a 1441)
BPGS2001 identifies John's wife merely as Janet Hay. 'The Lay' identifies her as ...
  m. Janet de Hay (dau of Sir William de Hay of Erroll)
  i. William Turin of Foveran
  m. Elizabeth Cheyne of Meikle Tipperty identified by 'The Lay' (p56)
'The Lay' shows William's successors, all father to son, as Gilbert (probably killed at Flodden, 1513) father of Gilbert (a 1514) father (by Catherine Arbuthnott) of William (a 1555) father by Janet (Les** = Leslie??) of Robert (m.Helen Carnegy). William is shown by BPGS2001 as presumed father of the following John who succeeded before 1482.
  a. John Turn of Foveran (d before 1503)
  m. Catherine Vaux
  (1) William Turn of Foveran (a 1508)
  (A) Gilbert Turn of Foveran (a 03.1527)
  (1) 'The Lay' shows 2 generations of Gilberts, the first alive in 1505 but "Probably slain at Flodden 1513" with the 2nd (a 1514) married to Catherine Arbutnott. BPGS2001 shows just 1 Gilbert.
(2) BPGS2001 mentions only Gilbert's marriage to Helen Cheyne but does not specify that she was mother of his son & successor. 'The Lay' mentions only Gilbert's marriage to Catherine Arbuthnott, showing her as mother of William. Provisionally, we assume that Gilbert married twice as follows.
  m1. (before 1505) Helen Cheyne
  (i) William Turn of Foveran (d before 09.02.1555/6)
  m. Janet Les** (Leslie?) identified by 'The Lay'
## 'The Lay' shows 2 sons in the next generation, James (a 1560, 1600) & Robert (m. Helen Carnegy, with father identified) with it being shown that James was father of Sir John (1st Bart), William (d 1651), Henry, Thomas & Janet. However, BPGS2001 mentions just Robert (m. Helen Carnegie, with father not identified) and shows him as father of "his son" (N.B. not "his eldest son") Sir William who was father of Sir John (1st Bart), Henry & others. TCB identifies Sir John, 1st Bart, as son of James of Foveran, identifying 'The Lay' as a source on the family. For once we discount TCB and follow BPGS2001. It appears that 'The Lay' simply missed out a generation (Sir William) and then attributed William's children to Robert's brother James.. The following appears to be consistent with most of this but it remains possible that some of the people shown below as children of Sir William were children of James.
  (a) Robert Turing of Foveran (d before 1580)
  m. Helen Carnegie (dau of Sir Robert Carnegie of Kinnaird, widow of William Lundin (who d after 06.1551), m3. John Gordon)
((1)) Sir William Turing of Foveran (d before 1613) - continued below
  (b) James Turing
'The Lay' identifies Catherine Arbuthnott as dau of Andrew (son of Sir Robert of Arbuthnott) by Elizabeth Strachan. However, TSP (Arbuthnott) shows her a generation earlier.
m2. (c1515) Catherine Arbuthnott (sister of Andrew Arbuthnott, son of Sir Robert of Arbuthnott, widow of David Auchinleck)

Sir William Turing of Foveran (d before 1613) - continued above
As mentioned in note ## above, it is possible that some of the children noted below were in fact children of the James shown above as Sir William's uncle. BPGS2001, which identifies Sir William as father of Sir John & Henry "with other issue", also reports that Sir John, 1st Bart, "was served heir to his eldest brother 1616". 'The Lay' does not help identify anyone of his generation who appears to be older than John unless that was William.
1/2. Sir John Turing of Foveran, 1st Bart (d 1662)
BPGS2001 identifies Sir John's wife Barbara as dau of George Gordon of Gight. The Gordon records suggest that she was daughter of ...
  m. (25.05.1624) Barbara Gordon (d 02.1639, dau of Alexander Gordon, son of George of Gight)
  A. George Turing (dvp before 27.02.1657)
