THE BARNS CONNECTION

Anyone who has looked at the entry for the Barns-Graham family in various editions of Burke's Landed Gentry (filed under G for Graham of Lymekilns, the family is not in the latest edition) may be surprised by what is shown in the Barns1 page in this site. That is because Burke's various editions, based on information provided by the family, are all wrong! In a way this is not surprising because the earliest edition I have mentioning the family (the 7th edition, published in 1886) was only a few years after my great-grandfather changed his family name from Graham to Barns-Graham (after he inherited the Ayrshire property of Kirkhill which had been entailed by John Barns, 4th of Kirkhill). Over successive years, research done (not least for successive editions of Burke's Landed Gentry) uncovered more information about the Barns side of the family. The information given in the Barns1 page of this site follows research done by my late father, Patrick Allan Barns-Graham (PABG). For many years he was an active member of the Merchants House of Glasgow (in 1977-79 he was its Lord Dean of Guild, the 'second citizen' of the great city of Glasgow). He investigated his relationship with members of the Barns and Bell families who had been either Dean of Guild or Provost of the City in the 17th century. He found more information and realised that the previously understood line of descent was wrong. The following shows the various changes made over the years to the understanding of earlier generations of the Barns family.PCBG
