Some sources identify Sir James as son (rather than grandson) of Michael, 1st of Munquhanny, possibly because TSP, which focuses on his wife's parentage, does so. However, we do not do so, instead showing him as of a generation later, because:
(1) According to various biographical web sites, James was born some 12 years after the battle of Flodden where Michael died. BLG1952, which reports that Andrew (2nd of Munquhanny) had 7 sons but (unfortunately) does not name any of them but skips to his grandson & successor at Munquhanny, reports that Andrew was the only son of Michael.
(2) BLG1850, BLG1886 & 'Fife P&H' all show Sir James as son of Andrew whilst BE1883 identifies him as brother of William, Commendator of Montrose.
