William Bates of Bedlington, Northumberland
1. James Bates of Milbourne (a temp Edward IV who r. 1461-1483)
Commoners reports that, after James, the "next on record" was the undermentioned Thomas of Ovington Hall, MP. HoP ("Thomas Bates") identifies the parents of the MP but we presume that there was an intervening generation.
  A. ?? Bates
  i. Thomas Bates of Ovington (d by 1544)
  m. Joan Creswell (dau of Robert Creswell of Newbiggin)
  a. Thomas Bates of Ovington Hall (b by 1526, d 31.08.1587, MP for Morpeth)
  m. Isabel
Commoners reports that Thomas was succeeded by his son & heir Robert who was succeeded by his son Cuthbert. [BLG1886 starts with Ralph (bpt 1613) other than to identify him as great-great-grandson of this Thomas.] However, HoP ("Thomas Bates"), which identifies Thomas as "of Morpeth and Holywell, Northumb.", queries if he dsp, reporting that, in a deed made in 1584, he "entailed his lands on his brother Robert, with successive remainders to his nephews Cuthbert, Thomas and George". That is supported by 'A History of Northumberland' (vol 7, John Crawford Hodgson, 1904, 'Bertram, Conyers, Cresswell, and Bates of Eshot', p341) which also shows Thomas's brothers William & Anthony who had died before Thomas produced that deed. Thanks to a contributor (DK, 03.11.21) who, with reference to various documents (such as this report from the Court of Star Chamber), confirmed that Robert was Thomas's brother and not his son.
