Commoners reported that in early times the family name was spelled as Boraille, Borell & Burwell "but now generally Burrell". Commoners also noted that "It is difficult, at this distance of time, to trace the connection between the family of Broomepark and that of Lord Willoughby de Eresby, (whose surname is Burrell), and Sir Charles Burrell, but that they are of the same lineage there can be little doubt."
