TSP reports that "some authorities (Douglas's Baronage), though without alleging any proof, have derived (this family) from the Dulcaben branch" of the family of Robertson of Strowan. The following connection is made provisionally to support that allegation but it should be noted that TSP reports that "it remains uncertain if Colyear was adopted as an alternative cognomen, or was in fact the original patronymic."
