BEB1841 reports that "This ancient family is descended from that of D'Albini, Earls of Sussex". The first who settled in Wales was probably the following John of whom Griffith reports the following: "After the battle off Blackheath, 1497, Henry Vii. gave this demesne to Robert Dolben, for his services at Blackheath, and his voyage to Exeter."

'Welsh Biography Online' reports of the following John, father of Rev. William, that his "precise relationship to the parent stock is uncertain". However, BEB1841 identifies his son William as "first cousin to David ... Bishop of Bangor" which would place John as of this generation.
