Families covered: Ettricke of Berford (Barford), Ettrick of High Barnes, Ettricke of Sunderland
Commoners reports that the following Anthony "is the earliest of his family in Dorsetshire, probably in England", being "a gentleman of consideration", and that there is "a degree of plausibility to the tradition in the family" that Anthony was "a younger son of the Earl of Dunbarton, in Scotland, whose name was Douglas, and who enjoyed amongst his other dignities the title of Lord Ettrick" and that Anthony had to flee Scotland and "selected the most retired and the most remote part of England". There were Douglas Earls of Dunbarton who were also Lords Douglas of Ettrick. However, as they lived in the 17th century, it is not clear why that association could be viewed as plausible. Patrick Ruthven was created Lord Ruthven of Ettrick before he became Earl of Forth, and later Earl of Brentford, but he too was born long after Anthony. | |||||||||||||||
