| We have seen it suggested that this family descended from John, son of Neil, Earl of Carrick, who was granted Craigcaffie by King Robert the Bruce. However, Neil, Earl of Carrick, had no legitimate sons. [His daughter was mother of King Robert the Bruce.] It is, of course, possible that the 1st Neilson of Craigcaffie was son of an illegitimate son of Earl Neil.
