John Cordell or Cordall of Long Melford (bur 07.01.1563)
Thanks to a site visitor (CV, 16.10.12) for advising us that Oxford DNB reports that the following Sir William (b 1522) "was the eldest son of John Cordell, originally from Edmonton" and for drawing our attention to 'Savage Fortune' which reports (here) that "The Cordell family are said to have come from Enfield (although some sources say Edmonton)". This raises the possibility that Sir William, son of John and Master of the Rolls for Queen Elizabeth, might have been the same person as the William shown in the lower section as son of John and "Master Cooke" for Queen Elizabeth. It is very tempting to presume that they were indeed the same person (which implies that a contributor to Visitation (London, 1568) might have misunderstood the role of the Master of the Rolls!) but, for the moment at least, we hold back from doing so in the hope that a site visitor who has investigated this matter will share his/her findings with us.
