Families covered: Cordell of London, Cordell of Long Melford
The uncertainty on the first generation of this family was much of the reason why we left our first attempts on this page as Draft (launched 03.09.06, revised 04.04.13). The first named by 'The History of Long Melford' is William of Edmonton, Middlesex, father of Robert of London and John of Melford, father of Sir William. Visitation (London, 1568, 'Cordell') starts with Thomas of Enfield, Middlesex, showing him as father of John (father of William) and Robert (father of Thomas). 'The History of Long Melford' and Wikipedia ("William Cordell") both support the view that the last Thomas (son of Robert) was the Thomas who is the first mentioned by Visitation (London, 1634-5).

1. | John Cordell of Long Melford, Suffolk (bur 07.01.1563-4)
Visitation (London, 1568') identifies John as "of Enfeild". Wikipedia ("William Cordell") identifies Sir William's father as John (d 1553) "from Edmonton ... principal aide to Sir William Clopton". HoP ("William Clopton") describes him (d 01.1563-4) as "a servant of Sir William Clopton".

Part of the reason why we were able to raise the status of this page from Draft was that we obtained confidence that the "William Cordell of Fulham, Master Cooke to Queene Elizabeth" mentioned by Visitation (London, 1568) was the same person as this Sir William, Master of the Rolls, a role that involves presiding over the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) and has nothing to do with cooking!
