Adam Carye of Castle Carye = Adam de Karry of Castle Karry in Somerset (a 1198)
m. Anne Trevit (dau of Sir William Trevit or Trevet)
1. John Carye or Karry
  m. Elizabeth Stapleton (dau of Sir Richard Stapleton)
  A. William Cary or Karry of West Polworth, Devon (d 1302-3)
  m. Alice Beaumont (dau of Sir William Beaumont (Beauchamp?) of Paveston?)
  i. John or Sir William Cary of Karry named John by Vivian & Lipscomb, Sir William by BE1883
  m. Phillip(a) Archdecon (dau of Sir Warren or John Archdecon) father named Warren by Vivian, John by BE1883
It appears that there is some confusion over this and the next few generations. Both Vivian & BE1883 show two sons in the next generation, John & William. However, Vivian shows that it was Sir William who was the progenitor of the family but BE1883 showing that it was Sir John (who m. Margaret Holwell). Other than to confirm descent from the above-mentioned Adam de Karry or Cary of Castle Cary, BP1934 starts with Sir John father of the Sir John who m. Margaret Holeway. That would appear to support BE1883 but Vivian inserts an additional generation not mentioned by BE1883 (who may have confused the different Johns/Williams). Lipscomb shows Sir John (son of William & Alice) as m1. Agnes (dau of Lord Stafford) & Margaret (dau/heir of William Holwell of Holwell, widow of Sir Guy de Brian) mother of the Robert who m. Margaret Courtenay. Provisionally we follow Vivian but will probably review this in due course.
  a. Sir William Carye
  m. Margaret Bozume (dau of Richard Bozume)
  (1) Sir John Cary of Cary Manor in St. Giles in the Heath, Devon
BE1883 shows that the following Agnes was 1st wife of the Sir John who m. Margaret Holwell. Vivian shows her as wife of this Sir John. BP1934, which starts its continuous pedigree with this Sir John, does not name his wives. Provisionally we follow Vivian.

m2. Jane de Brian (dau of Sir Guy de Brian)
  (A) Sir John de Cary of Upper Cary (Chief Baron of the Exchequer) died 1397 (Vivian) or 1404 (BP1934)
BE1883 identifies Sir John's (2nd) wife as Margaret, dau of William Holwell of Holwell, widow of Sir Guy de Brian. Vivian names her Margaret, dau/heir of Robert Holeway. BP1934 identifies her as ...
  m. (1376) Margaret Holeway (dau of Richard de Holeway or Holloway of Northlaw, Beaworth & Morton)
  (i) Sir Robert Cary of Cockington & Clovelly the first mentioned by BLG1952
m1. Margaret or Elizabeth Courtenay (dau of Sir Philip Courtenay of Powderham)
Sir Robert's 1st wife is named Margaret by BP1934 & BE1883 but Elizabeth by Vivian & BLG1952. BP1934 & BE1883 show Margaret as mother of Philip (without mentioning any other issue). Vivian shows the 2nd wife, Jane, as mother of Phillip & Johanna. BLG1952 does not mention who was Philip's mother. Provisionally we follow BP1934 & BE1883 in showing the son of the 1st marriage as ...
