Various web sites refer to certain of the following family as being 'of Compton', implying a connection with the family shown on Gilbert01. However, VCH (Somerset, vol 8, Woolavington) provides the following descent for Richard, father of Joan who m. Roger Pym, which suggests that there may have been no connection at all. Unfortunately, that descent contradicts what is shown in the Visitations which, provisionally, we give precedence to. VCH starts with 2 brothers, son of ...

Anthony is not mentioned in the Visitations but is identified by HoP ('Anthony Gilbert') as "2nd s. of Robert Gilbert (d. 1537) of Corton Denham by Margaret, da. of one Bamfield".

  We have yet to see reliable evidence as to how Robert, father of Elizabeth, fitted into this family but it seems highly likely that he did. We have seen him described as 'of Corton Denham' which might equate him with the Robert shown above as m1. Elizabeth Wadham m2. Margaret Baumfield but the dates suggest that Elizabeth must have been of the same generation (or an earlier generation) as that Robert. What we show makes Elizabeth's 1st husband her 2nd cousin.
