Families covered: Jones (Johnes) of Abermarles (Abermarlais), Johnes of Dolecothy (Dolau Cothy), Johnes of Llanvairclydoge

John (FitzUryan) ap Thomas of Abermarlais (Abermarles) (dvp)
(1) The seat of this family was at Abermarles, Carmarthenshire. It is sometimes shown as Albermarles or Albemarles, possibly being confused with the place called Albemarle in Normandy which, possibly because of it being of some significance in Plantagenet times, was used in the title for the dukedom of the Moncks and the earldom of the Keppels.
(2) That John was son of Thomas ap Gruffydd ap Nicholas ap Philip ap Elidir Ddu is given by Griffith's Pedigrees ('Hafod y Wern', p275).
m. Elizabeth (dau of Thomas Vaughan of Bredwardine by Elinor, dau of Robert, Lord Whitney)
1. Sir Thomas Johnes or Jones of Abermarles (Abermarlais) & Haroldston (Pembrokeshire), Sheriff of Carmarthenshire (d 1559)
Commoners mentions only Sir Thomas's marriage to Mary Berkeley and their children, following the line of James. The following is supported by VCH (Buckinghamshire, vol 2, Parishes: Horsenden) & VCH (vol 3, Buckinghamshire, vol 3, Parishes: Saunderton) with some input, shown in italics, from information kindly provided by a contributor (OWC, 31.08.15).

m1. (by 1554) Elizabeth (d 10.08.1571, dau of Mathew Herbert of Cogan Pill)

Much of the following was shown on a Temporary page from 17.09.09, being based on TCB (vol 2, 'Jones of Abermarles', p213), until it was moved here with following further input/support from Griffith's Pedigrees ('Hafod y Wern & The Pulestons', p275).

(1) Sir Henry Jones, Bart of Abermarles, Sheriff of Carmarthenshire (d by 05.1644)
(1) TCB mentions only Margaret Williams as Henry's wife but BEB1841 ('Jones of Albemarlis') identifies his wife as Elizabeth Salisbury (dau of Sir John Salisbury, relict of John Salisbury of Rugg) which appears to be confusion with the Sir Henry of 3 generations earlier.
(2) TCB identifies the undermentiond Elizabeth as "2d. and yst. da. and eventually sole heir". Debrett's Peerage (1820, vol 1, Marquess Cornwallis) identifies Elizabeth as "sole daughter and heir". However, the Stepney records show 2 sisters as probably of this generation, both of whom had children. Provisionally, we show them all as children of this Sir Henry but hope to find confirmation or contradiction of this in due course
