Families covered: Stedman of Cilcennin, Stedman of Strata Florida
(1) Green reports that this family "claims an exceedingly romantic, if somewhat incredible ancestry" and also "The Stedman genealogy as regards the earlier generations is extremely chaotic. In Lewis Dwnn's Visitation there are three pedigrees of the family, but none of these favour us with the realistic account furnished by the Peniarth M.S." and then "A comparison of these three pedigrees shows discrepancies .. and it is impossible to reconcile the variances until towards the end of the 16th century." Accordingly, whilst we show the earlier generations (as reported in 'History of Brecknockshire', we have not bothered with Lewis Dwnn's work), we suggest that the whole of the upper section should be viewed with caution. (2) Reputed to be son of Calcarbas/Calcarba or Balearbus, a Duke of Arabia who was banished from his homeland (with Stedman and his daughter Clarissa) and was on his way to exile in Jerusalem when he died, was the following Stedman who served Richard I in Jerusalem and was taken prisoner by Archduke Leopold with the King. |
