Families covered: Micklethwait of Ardsley, Micklethwait of Beeston, Micklethwait of Ingbirchworth, Micklethwait of Swine
BLG1886 mentions that "This family, an ancient Saxon one, as its name implies, signifying in that language "a great pasture", has been seated in the neighbourhood of Barnsley, co. York, over a period of six centuries. Their early residence was Micklethwait, in Ingbirchworth, parish of Penistone. In deed of that place their names appear prior to A.D. 1272."

B. | Elias Micklethwait (a 1644)
BLG1952 reports that this Elias "commanded a troop of horse at the battle of Marston Moor, 1644". That contradicts Dugdale & BE1883 which suggest that this was the Elias (d c1630) who was ancestor of Viscount Micklethwait. Provisionally, we show that Elias in the section below.
|
|||||||||||||||
Sir William Micklethwait of Kimberworth, Yorkshire
(1) BLG1886 identifies Sir William as "ancestor of the extinct Viscounts Micklethwait" (though there was only one such Viscount) and then follows the line of the undermentioned John of Beeston (son of Nathaniel of Maresfield) who is described as 6th in descent from Sir William. (2) Wholly arbitrarily, we speculate that the line of Nathaniel of Maresfield splits from that of Elias of York at this generation. |

m. (1792) Sophia Stracey (dau of Sir Robert Stracey, 1st Bart of Rackheath)
Assuming that Sir William was indeed ancestor of Viscount Micklethwait, the dates suggest that he was probably father or grandfather of the following Elias. Note that both Dugdale & BE1883 show Elias as son of John of Ingbirchworth and brother of the next John of Inbirchworth (with Dugdale adding another brother, Francis of York who dsp). However, as implied above, by the time of BLG1886 & BLG1952 that Elias appears to have been identified as a different Elias from ....
2. | Elias Micklethwayt, Mayor of York (d c1630)
m1. Dorothy Jaques | |||||||||||||||
m2. ?? (widow of _ Arlington)
Dugdale shows Dorothy Jaques as mother of Elias's children, showing no children by his 2nd marriage. BE1883 reports that Elias had no issue by her, implying that the children were by his 2nd marriage. BE1883 shows Elias as the eldest son. Dugdale shows him as the youngest.

(2) | Joseph Micklethwait of Swine & Cosham, Viscount Micklethwait of Longford (d unm 16.01.1733/4, MP)
BE1883 suggests that Joseph was b c1708. Noting that his (elder) brother died in 1718 having been one of the lords of the Treasury, we suspect that TCP (Micklethwaite) is more likely to be correct in suggesting that Joseph was b c1680.
