(1) The family web site reports that the first mention of this family in Detling appears in "Kent Assize Roll 359 of 1241" which refers to Alice, widow of Edward Polehill (son of Simon de Polehill), and her sons William & Simon. The site suggests that the fortunes of the family rose after the marriage of John Polley with Alice Buckland which starts the pedigree.
(2) The spelling of the family name appears to have varied. Visitation (Kent) mostly uses Polley whilst Visitation (Sussex) & Berry use Polhill. We mainly use Polhill, partly because that is the spelling used by other of our sources and partly to reduce confusion between this family and that shown on Poley1 which we presume to be unconnected.
(3) Lack of time has meant that we have not studied the below-mentioned family web site as much as could be done so it is likely that more could be obtained from that site than what is shown below. We may (but may not) revisit that site in due course.
