Families covered: Rede (Read) of Beccles, Rede of Redesdale, Read (Reade or Rede) of Weston
[This page was originally launched as Reade3. It was renamed when it was deduced that the family below provided the ancestor of the family shown on the earlier version of Reade1, now named Reade3.]

Rossiana reports that "The Reades of Barton Court were unquestionably descended from the Northumbrian Redes, who were of Royal origin, through Cairbre Riada, who was the son of Conaire, King of Ireland , and who established the Kingdom of Dalriada on the western coast of Scotland, of which nine sovereigns ruled in succession. The ninth, Reuda (or Riada), whose Christian name is said to have been Aedan, after his defeat by Kenneth, settled in Redesdale, where he founded the clan." Rossiana starts the pedigree with ...
Rede of Troughend
1. Brian de Rede the first mentioned by Edward Reed
  A. William de Rede (2nd son)
Other than to mention that he was 4th in descent from Brianus de Rede (a 11369), this appears to be the William who is the first mentioned by BLG1847 but that identifies him as father of Robert (d 1346, father by Cecilia Randal of Robert (d 1415), Bishop of Carlisle then Chichester), William (d 18.08.1385, Bishop of Chichester) and Thomas father of Thomas (a 1429) father of Edmund of Hedington who is mentioned ## below. BLG1847 identifies William's wife as ...
  m. Margaret Glanville
  i. Robert de Rede
  a. David de Rede generation included by Rossiana but not by Edward Reed
  (1) Galfrinus de Rede
  (A) Thomas de Rede or de Redesdale of Morpeth, Northumberland (2nd son)
It is not clear if the data provided by Rossiana and Edward Reed contradict or supplement each other from this generation. Our uncertainty arises because there appears to be overlap of dates between different Thomases. We presume that they basically support each other (as follows) but suggest that the whole of this upper section should be viewed with at least some caution.
(i) Thomas de Rede
Rossiana shows that Thomas (son of Thomas son of Galfrinus) was living in 1377 & 1412 and was father of Sir Thomas, William & Edward and then follows the line of Edward. Edward Reed shows that Thomas (son of Thomas son of Galfrinus) was living in 1429 and was father of Thomas whose line he then follows.

Edward Reed suggests that Thomas was father of ...

Thomas Read - continued above
1. John Read of Norwich (d 11.11.1502) the first mentioned by the Visitation
  m. Joan Ludlow (d 1503)
BLG1847 inserts an extra generation here, showing William as eldest son (by Philippa Bacon) of Thomas of Beccles son (by Joan Ludlow) of John of Norwich. BLG1847 shows furthetr disagreement with the above with John being shown as eldest son of Edward (by Izod, dau of Sir Humphrey Stanley, probably confusion with the Edward we show as his 2nd son; with Edward's brothers being Sir Bartholomew (Mayor of London) & Sir Robert (Lord Chief Justice)), that Edward being second son (by Christiana, dau of Robert James by Catherine de la Pole) of Edmund of Hedington who is mentioned ## above.
